Changes to Prescription Lengths (Effective February 2026)
What you need to know
From February 2026, New Zealand Government regulations allow GPs to issue prescriptions for up to 12 months.
While this change offers more flexibility, it is important to note that the length of any prescription is based on clinical safety and what is most appropriate for your specific health needs. A 12-month prescription is only suitable for a small number of patients with highly stable conditions.
